We recently put the finishing touches on our newest track, which we’re calling ‘Doin’ Stuff’. We kind of went in a Michael Jackson direction with this one. Not saying its as good as Michael Jackson, but even half as good as MJ is still pretty darn good. If you listen to it, please leave a comment below and let us know what you think. If you want a bit of the backstory for the song, keep reading.
So here’s the history of ‘Doin Stuff’ which is also a bit of band history as well. I wrote this song in honor of my best friend Darrian Balongie. I met Darrian a few years ago, and in a very short time he completely changed the direction of my music. Darrian was an awesome guy, this totally happy-go-lucky skater kid from Oklahoma who learned to play bass by idolizing and imitating Les Claypool. Darrian once longboarded across the country, Boston to San Diego, to raise money for St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital. He did this whole trip on a skateboard in only three months. He never accepted a ride or a shortcut, and, with no money in his pocket, relied totally on the kindness of strangers. He made friends wherever he went. He was just that type of guy.
About a year ago Darrian died suddenly from complications due to pneumonia. This was a gut shot, totally unexpected, and the only way I could process it was through writing a song. The song you hear was written almost entirely the night he died. So the song is about my best friend, losing him, and how it felt that night.
